What to Grow in a Town Garden
Not everyone is lucky enough to have a garden. Many people just live in an apartment with a balcony. But why not a garden and a balcony? With the right equipment you can turn your balcony into a kitchen garden and grow your own vegetables, fruits or flowers. So make sure you choose the right equipment and the right plants, as they do not do everything for growing on the balcony.
Before you start, you should check the distribution on your balcony. Not all plants can withstand a lot of sun, shade or rain. Whether the balcony is small or large, there are pots of all types and sizes that you can use on your balcony effectively.
The trick is to think not only in length but also in height. The variety of planting options is very large. You can decorate your balcony using planters on the balcony railings, planting baskets, ground planting flower beds, bags with opening at the bottom for e.g. potatoes, wall-mounted planting bags, pergolas or even balcony greenhouses. You can also independently adjust the different pots on the railings of the balcony or the external staircase, on the gutter, on the shutters or even on the hanger.
Ideally use pots with holes in the bottom to avoid over-watering. It is important that if you use a wall, it is stable for resistance to various conditions. To ensure that the soil remains in the pots, and does not leave the holes in the bottom, cover them with foil. Then drill holes in it so that the water can flow freely. The next step will be filling with soil and planting the seeds.
Tomatoes in pots
To make sure your tomatoes are big enough at the beginning of their season, they should first be grown on the window sill by mid-March. Use small pots, fill with soil, and place the seeds about 0.5 cm from the surface. Keep the soil moist, and cover the pot with plastic wrap to maintain a constant temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius.
Insert the support rod before planting so as not to injure the roots later. In mid-May you can transfer the pot to the balcony. Mix the soil with manure or tomato fertilizer to provide the necessary nutrients. Tomatoes need a sunny place, but without being exposed to rain. Water at regular intervals so that they do not dry out. For when will be the right time to harvest, check the packaging of the seeds as the time period varies from variety to variety.
Radishes in vegetable planting boxes
Around mid-March you can put radish seeds in planting boxes. Make sure the seeds are at least 5 cm apart. As for radishes, you do not need to grow small plants. Germination time is about 6 to 14 days. Place the box in a sunny, slightly shaded area. Water regularly so that the plant does not wither and after about 4 weeks you will have your first radishes. If you continue to plant seeds, you will be able to enjoy fresh radishes throughout the summer.
Parsley in planting bags
Parsley needs a nutritious and permeable soil in a moderately shaded area. You usually sow the seeds in late February to early March, or later in late July to early August. First soak the seeds in water overnight. Then place the seeds in a bag for low plants, and fill it with soil. Water the plants several times a day and after about three months you will have as much parsley as you need.
